Metro-North Shuttle in Bronx
A Metro-North Railroad success story could be a model for similar services in congested highway corridors and where park-and-rides are being considered to ease access to transit stations. Since October, 1991, Metro-North has offered Riverdale residents van shuttle service from their neighborhoods to two of its Bronx stations (Riverdale and Spuyten Duyvil). "The service has been a great success," said Dan O'Connell, a Metro-North official. "In 1991 when we started the project, there were roughly 200 people who used the service. Now there are over 900 riders daily." The vans run from 6am to 11pm and during peak hours have two neighborhood routes from each station. The cost to users is $20 per month. Metro-North is also considering a similar service from Co-op City to the Fordham Road station in the Bronx.
