Car-Free Time on Bronx Grand Concourse

The Bronx's Grand Concourse, a boulevard of speeding cars and dangerous intersections, was "pedestrianized" this summer. On Sundays in July and August, the middle four lanes of the roadway were closed to auto traffic for 3 1/2 miles, from 161st Street to 198th Street. The program was slated to end on Labor Day. Now, thanks to prompt and effective intervention by Transportation Alternatives (T.A.'s Bronx Committee marshalled over 500 individuals to write to Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer), the closings have been extended to mid-November and will start again early in the spring. The Borough President initiated the closings this summer and was impressed with their popularity -- and evidently with the mail he received on the issue this fall.
