NYC EJA Borough Transportation Meeting

The New York City Environmental Justice Alliance held the first of a series of borough transportation meetings in the Bronx on September 22nd. Representatives from community boards, the Bronx Clean Air Coalition and Transportation Alternatives' Bronx Committee attended. Alliance director Michelle DePass spoke on the links between transportation and environmental justice, followed by an overview of regional transportation issues from Tri-State Campaign director Janine Bauer. Participants later discussed particular issues that were affecting their communities, like moving bus stops without prior notification and changing streets from one-way to two-way without proper signs. The meeting was planned as a first step to building an agenda and community consensus for transportation change in the borough. As a follow-up, the Bronx Clean Air Coalition will coordinate more regular communication between community board transportation committees, looking forward to the formation of a Bronx Transportation Committee to promote community transportation needs. One or more Brooklyn transportation meetings are next on the Environmental Justice Alliance's community organizing schedule.
