Transit Authority "Faster than Walking?" Report Given to News Organizations
A Tri-State Campaign member organization gave NY Newsday a draft Transit Authority report entitled "Faster than Walking?" which describes how bus travel in NYC has ground to a near halt because of traffic congestion and which calls for redesigned curb space and bus lanes to help prioritize bus travel on city streets. Newsday's write-up quoted the Campaign's Jon Orcutt explaining that transportation agencies often work at cross-purposes with one another, a theme picked up by WCBS radio and Channel 5's Good Day NY. Transit Authority sources have said that NYC Dept. of Transportation response to the report has been cautious but not entirely negative. The City DOT has a number of bus lane development projects in the approved TIP, and Campaign members will follow up to see whether Transit Authority recommendations are being incorporated into the plans. To obtain the report, contact the Division of Operations Planning at the Transit Authority, 718-694-3682.
