Port Authority Wants to Raise Tolls in 1996
The Port Authority of NY and NJ said December 1 that it would maintain tolls on its bridges and tunnels at $4 and the PATH train fare at $1 through 1995, but said increases would be necessary during 1996. NJ Republican Port Authority board member Lewis Eisenberg immediately challenged the Authority to find more spending cuts. Eisenberg will be joined on the board shortly by two new Pataki appointees. The politics of the Port Authority is going to be dramatically changed with the Republicans at the helm in both New York and New Jersey, NYU Urban Research Center's Mitchell Moss told the NY Post. Republicans treat toll increases as just a tax on motorists.
