NJDOT Corrects MTR Report on Route 22 Widening
Gary Toth of the NJ Dept. of Transportation wrote to the Tri-State Transportation Campaign citing inaccuracies in our reporting of issues pertaining to construction work along Route 22 in North Plainfield. The October 28 edition of this bulletin cited an Oct 23 news report by WNBC TV which said that the road widening project required the removal of a strip of businesses that made up half of the town's tax base. Toth's letter says that the correct figure is about 2% of the tax base. It also points out that while the one planning scheme requires a small amount of property near a town school, it does not encroach on the town's football field, as the October report suggested. The letter acknowledges that the Route 22 projects were moved into final design more quickly than local opinion was ready to accept, and that the Department is now working with local officials to produce new designs to account for expressed concerns.
