NYC Transit Document: 20,000 Riders Have No Access to Alternative Transportation
A NYC Transit document obtained by NY Newsday says that more than 20,000 New Yorkers who currently ride subways and buses will have no access to alternative transit service when service cuts recently approved by the MTA board are effected later this year. NYC Transit also says that another 115,000 weekday transit trips will become less convenient. The Straphangers Campaign's Gene Russianoff said that earlier Transit estimates had deliberately masked the impact of the cuts. Transit watchers also think that other cuts not formally classified as "service" reductions will over time contribute to a degradation of transit service. The NY Times recently cited former MTA and Transit Authority officials who said cleaning and maintenance cuts will catch up with the system in a few years, causing delay, safety and rider convenience and amenity problems.
