NJTPA Endorses Whitman Plan to Renew NJ Transportation Trust Fund
The North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority endorsed the Whitman Administration's plan to renew NJ's Transportation Trust Fund, but proposed that non-transportation uses for the state's gas tax be phased out by 1998. The Whitman plan seeks to increase the amount of the gas tax constitutionally dedicated to transportation spending to 5.5 cents (the tax is 10.5 cents/gallon). Authority leaders want to break the state's habit of using gas tax revenue for general purposes.
