MTA and Metro-North Participate In Transit Friendly Housing Demo Project

The MTA and Metro-North Railroad are participating in a Federal Transit Administration/U. California Berkeley Transit Access Center demonstration project on transit-friendly housing development. The project seeks to encourage residential development along Westchester County rail lines rather than in the dominant car-dependent suburban sprawl pattern. Variously called urban villages or walkable communities, mixed-use development is being considered by Metro-North to boost transit ridership while reducing need for increased rail station parking. Under study are dedication of rail station land for development and/or securing support of localities to re-zone land for higher density development near a transit stop. Demonstrations are being considered for Harrison or Ossining in Westchester.
