Washington Committees Hold Oversight Hearings on Clean Air Act

In Washington, House Commerce and Senate Environment and Public Works Committees have been holding oversight hearings on the Clean Air Act. To date, there have been hearings on inspection and maintenance, the employer commute option program, a hearing on clean air/transportation plan conformity in the Senate and a general oversight hearing with EPA Administrator Browner and state governors in the House. The hearings follow activity in March by the National Governors Association and Environmental Council of the States, who are promoting flexible approaches to compliance with Clean Air Act goals and mandates. In Congress, there are over 20 bills introduced to repeal or delay programs, titles or the whole 1990 Clean Air Act Amendment.
