Manhattan Light Rail Suit Loses

A Manhattan judge dismissed a suit by midtown community groups opposed to the 42nd Street light rail project Wednesday. The suit charged that the rail line would increase car traffic on neighboring streets, but the court found that the City had taken the required "hard look" at the plan's environmental impacts. The line would run from the United Nations to the Javitz Convention Center. The Giuliani Administration is still deciding whether to push the project to implementation. A $300,000 federal grant for the project is in limbo pending a decision. The midtown groups say another fight will develop over the location of a maintenance facility for the trolley vehicles, and plan to appeal Wednesday's decision. NY Post, Daily News
