Campaign Project Update: Pedestrian Advocacy

The Campaign's pedestrian advocacy project is gathering momentum. In New York City, Transportation Alternatives and the Tri-State Transportation Campaign are set to release a report detailing NYC traffic safety expenditures planned for the next five years, showing that the vast sums slated for highway safety relative to the pedestrian safety budget are far out of proportion to the actual dangers New Yorkers face in traffic. Each year, more pedestrians are killed than motorists within the five boroughs. New York City Campaign members are also preparing to launch the NYC Neighborhood Streets Network, a coalition of civic and neighborhood groups concerned with traffic impacts and local and city-wide initiatives for traffic relief. Mailings containing the Network's general agenda, information on pedestrian safety and traffic calming and draft City Council resolutions on traffic calming are being developed for NYC Campaign affiliates and a large database of community groups, PTAs and local merchants associations.

New Jersey Campaign members are working to ensure that uniform site standards for developers reflect pedestrian-friendly values, and are producing model planning ordinances and circulation plans for three towns and the City of Newark. The NJ groups are also developing a proposal to increase pedestrian safety along Route 1.
