Orange County: Won't Pay MTA

Citing deteriorating service and poor representation on the MTA's board, Orange County legislators voted unanimously last week to withhold $45,000 in railroad station maintenance fees. The MTA sought this payment in addition to the $325,000 already budgeted by the County.

The move was spearheaded by Richard Roberts, a Port Jervis Democrat who says Orange County gets neither good service nor clean trains for its money. The county

contributes $30 million per year in sales and incorporation taxes to the MTA. County lawmakers think most of it flows to New York City. Other Orange County politicians say the county's one-quarter vote on the Authority's 17-member board insufficiently represents the growing commuter population. Approximately 1,400 Orange County commuters ride Metro-North trains each day. Negotiations on the payment dispute have begun. Times Herald Record
