Deadly intersection exposed

The deaths last Wednesday of two women under the wheels of a laundry truck at 7th Ave and 59th St. in Manhattan might have been prevented by better planning and safety investment. Members of Transportation Alternatives made the point Friday, escorting people across the intersection with a "DOT, Do Your Job!" banner, handing out "This didn't have to happen!" flyers and painting in sidewalk extensions, also known as neckdowns, at the curb.

The flyers said the crossing is dangerous because of a combination of a brief pedestrian walk time, a too wide street and a left turn signal from 59th St. that surprises pedestrians.
