Transit Fight isn't Over: Boycott the New Token

Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer joined transit advocates today, calling on New Yorkers not to buy the $1.50 transit token the MTA has put on sale throughout New York City. "Don't pay that extra quarter while the fight to stop the quarter fare hike continues to rage," said the borough president. Ferrer said a "full court press" against the fare increase is continuing, both in court and politically. The Straphangers Campaign urged riders to use their quarters instead to call Governor George Pataki and Mayor Rudolph Giuliani and tell them to save the fare. On Oct. 20, the NY Urban League, the Straphangers Campaign and three transit riders filed suit in Federal district court in Manhattan, seeking a preliminary injunction to freeze the 25 cents fare hike before it takes effect. A hearing on the motion has been set for Nov. 2.
