Maplewood's Citizens Plan

In Maplewood, New Jersey, community activists and local officials have sketched an ambitious plan to help revitalize the town business district, dramatically improve the environment for pedestrian and cyclists, and improve access to the local train station. Responding to speeding through traffic in their neighborhood, citizens' groups representing have developed a three-tier plan designed to take capitalize on state and federal funding opportunities for the project.

The plan's first stage would improve lighting, signage, safety, and comfort around all bus stops along Maplewood's Springfield Ave., and would boost the area's pedestrian friendliness to attract foot traffic to local businesses. A second stage would launch a jitney to provide easy access to Maplewood's train station for residents beyond easy walking distance of the station. The jitney would encourage local residents to use the town's rail service to New York. The jitney project would coincide with the opening of the Kearny Connection next spring, providing direct service to Manhattan. The jitney could alleviate the projected parking crunch that led New Jersey Transit to propose construction of a new parking deck last year. Active citizens rallied against the project and defeated it.

The project's final stage will establish bicycle- and pedestrian-safe routes linking all sections of Maplewood with the train station, and the surrounding middle school and municipal building. Measures to slow traffic, and enhance crosswalks at dangerous intersections are planned as well. The plan would also provide for the installation of train station bike lockers, the replacement of hazardous street grates, and a designated network of bike routes.
