Gas Tax Opposition Fails in Connecticut
In the frenzied eleventh-hour of Connecticut's 1996 legislative session, a measure died that would have repealed a 3¢ state gas tax increase to be phased in this year. Motorists and gas retailers, particularly those on the CT border, lobbied heavily for eliminating the planned increases, reasoning CT lost business to less expensive fuel stations in border states. Rail advocates breathed a sigh of relief, as one proposal to restore revenue lost from the cancelled increases sought to take $3 million from the state's commuter rail operating budget.
