The News said the money would go to logo changes on hundreds of uniforms, dozens of buildings and thousands of vehicles and pieces of stationery. City Hall aides said the figure was high, and that the logo changes would be done on an ongoing, not an all-at-once, basis. Nonetheless, local T.V. and radio pounced on the story, and the News again ridiculed the change to DIMT in a Thursday op-ed. The name change appears to be a face-saving remnant of the plan to abolish the DOT included in Mayor Giuliani's original budget proposal. The idea came under criticism from many constituencies concerned about the importance of transportation planning to the city. The Administration appears to have backed away from that plan, though some DOT construction planners may be moved to the Dept. of Design and Construction created by the Mayor and City Council last year.
