Transit Service Watch

  • NYC Transit is adjusting motors on subway cars to slow them down. The problem is that trains are too powerful for the antiquated signal system. The change will add 3 to 51/2 minutes to each 90-minute subway run, according to transit officials.

  • Fires on subway platforms, tracks and subway trains broke out 13% more often in the last five months than in the same period a year ago, causing more delays for riders The problem is more trash on tracks and in stations, a result of cutbacks in track and station workers. After state and city fiscal support was cut, NYC Transit eliminated 463 subway car and station cleaners and 114 track worker and supervisor jobs.
