Around The Region: Newark Monorail Opens
The monorail connecting Newark Airport terminals is scheduled to open today. The initial 1.9 mile route will not leave the airport, though the Port Authority is developing a plan to run it to a new station along the NJ Transit/Amtrak Northeast Corridor line. Scheduled opening for that connection is the summer of 2001. The on-airport part of the project was supposed to be working by the end of 1994. Engineering problems encountered helped convince Port Authority planners to propose existing light-rail technology for a rail link to Kennedy International Airport in Queens. NY Times
