Because most electricity is generated by burning fossil fuels, replacing all gasoline-burning cars with an all-electric fleet today would reduce vehicular carbon-dioxide emissions (the largest contributor to global warming) by only 20%. The same improvement could be achieved, at lower cost, just by boosting the efficiency of gas-burning cars. Consumer Reports
