EDC Says Howland Hook Trains Are Coming
Responding to MTR #106 ("Howland Hook Trains Are Late") the NYC Economic Development Corporation called to inform us that it is finalizing a contract for refurbishing the NY/NJ rail bridge that will link the newly re-opened Howland Hook container port to the U.S. rail network, and that a contract for Staten Island track work linking Howland Hook and the site of a new Arthur Kill recycling plant to the bridge would be advertised in January or February. EDC says the contracting schedule is set up to make the tracks and the bridge operational at about the same time. Complicating the picture, however, is that the track work on the other side of the bridge is the responsibility of Union County, NJ. Union officials have said that they hope to begin track rehabilitation in spring or summer, 1997.
