Around the Region: PATH Battle Lost

PATH managers have lost a battle to save money by switching jurisdiction for oversight of the NJ/NY subway system from the Federal Railroad Administration to the Federal Transit Administration. Although PATH is a rapid transit system like those overseen by FTA, track connections to inter-city routes and a history of joint service with the Pennsylvania Railroad have meant that PATH has fallen under FRA supervision. This means more frequent and costly safety inspections. A Port Authority consultant said the system could save up to 20% of its operating deficit over several years if it made the switch, but FRA seems determined to keep a firm grip on PATH.
