Broad L.I. Transportation Study Under Way

The New York State DOT is conducting a $4.5 Million study of transportation needs in Long Island, and the public is invited to get involved. The study, which began last year and will run through 1999, will take a multi-modal look at Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and will try to capture information about transportation and probe issues such as land use and congestion pricing. The study leaders hope to have a good handle on future transportation needs at the study's conclusion.

Data collection is now being wrapped up, and subcommittees are forming to discuss different possible transportation solutions, according to Wayne Ugolik, director of travel demand management for NYS-DOT's Region 10 office. The six subcommittees will consist of agency officials and citizens, and will be on the following topics: transit and rideshare commuting options; bicycle and pedestrian options and special travel needs; improving freight movement; addressing traffic congestion and crashes; how land use and zoning can reduce congestion; and how to keep the public involved in planning. In addition, a "technical advisory committee" will consist of people from county government, DOT, FHWA, FTA, LI Assn., Auto Club of NY, Trucking Assn., MTA, LIRR and Assembly Member Sweeney and Senator Levy's offices.

There will also be 25 community meetings and three "tele-conference" meetings that will take place in one location while being beamed by satellite to four additional locations.
