No Planning Please, We're New Yorkers

At a recent Greater Jamaica Development Corp. meeting, Port Authority director Robert Boyle called the LIRR Jamaica Station the "Gateway to JFK airport." Boyle depicted the Port Authority's planned Jamaica-JFK light rail project as a potential savior of the Jamaica business and transportation hub, saying it could "revitalize the entire area around the station."

Jamaica economic development proponents are yet another constituency in the long, unfinished saga of rail access to NYC's airports. But the Jamaica gateway concept has yet to penetrate some quarters. A Federal Aviation Administration plan for a new office complex -- backed by the Giuliani Administration -- ignores Jamaica in favor a of a drive-only, parking rich site on JFK's northeastern fringe.
