Advocates Say Queens Subways More Crowded
The Committee for Better Transit reports that already-jammed Queens subway lines are being crowded further now that NYC bus-subway transfers are free. CBT says the MTA should:
- Restore peak-period service to the higher levels used during the 1960s;
- Increase service during rush hour "shoulders";
- Increase non-rush hour service on overcrowded Queens lines (to the point where there is no standing during off-peak times); and
- Increase local LIRR service and reduce the fare within the city limits.
CBT says these measures would be a good use for some of the $15 million for NYC transit service improvements that was included in this year's state budget.
