Around the Region: NJ Turnpike To Get Own Weather Tracking
Citing weather as the cause of one-third of all accidents on the NJ Turnpike, 100 sensors will be imbedded in the NJ Turnpike's roadway as part of a $2 million plan to keep close tabs on road conditions along the pike's 148 miles. $374,773 will cover the first part of the contract for the system, for which construction is expected to begin in 1999. The system will be able to tell the air temperature, precipitation accumulation and ice conditions all along the roadway, aiding in decisions such as whether to dispatch salt crews or reduce the speed limit.
