Art Bus
Previously, we had criticized the apparently car-only preparations underway for the big opening of the new New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark (see MTR 127). But recently, NJTransit announced it is arranging a bus shuttle loop service beginning October 4 between Newark's Penn and Broad Street Stations and the NJPAC. The buses will be run by the Orange-Elizabeth Bus Company of Newark, which won a nine-month long, $500,000 contract in September. $200,000 of the total operating cost will be donated by Prudential Insurance Company. Until now, the focus of access to NJPAC was a $7 million I-280 ramp project that has been rushed to completion for the arts center's October 18 opening. If it is ever built, the Newark-Elizabeth light rail line will serve the NJPAC and link it to regional rail service.
