Around the Region: Road Expansion Meets Direct Democracy

Road widening opponents in Middlefield, CT (south of Hartford) are on their way to winning a town meeting on the issue. Citizens for a Sensible 66 told the Courant they are confident they will garner sufficient signatures to trigger a meeting to debate ConnDOT's proposal to widen east-west CT Route 66 to four lanes. To the west, between Waterbury and Meriden, Rte 66 has been supplanted by I-691. The project under consideration would extend a high-volume highway east toward the Connecticut River. Citizens for Sensible 66 want the town to amass a legal fund to fight the project.
