Around the Region: PATH Crime

Crime in PATH trains was down 24% last year from 1996 levels. Officials attribute the decline to pro-active work by Port Authority police, but police union leaders say the reduction may reflect less patrol strength; hence, less reported crimes and arrests. PATH crime is low by most measures - in 1997, there were 35 reported robberies in and around the PATH system, compared with 44 in 1996 and 68 in 1995. Record
