In the wake of Yankee Stadium's fallen beam, Newsday editorialized in favor of the Manhattan rail yards site west of Penn Station as the best option for a new city stadium. The paper listed the site's "ready made web of transportation links" as a big plus. We guess it's been a while since we rode the 11th Ave subway or the cross-town line under 34th Street.
Two years ago, the Tri-State Transportation Campaign, EDF and others wrote to Mayor Giuliani and other officials stating that the lack of transit west of 8th Avenue presented a major impediment to large scale development over the west side yards.
One year ago, reports surfaced (see MTR #119) that Mayor Giuliani was reviving proposals for a light rail line in Midtown in connection with his interest in the west side stadium concept, but nothing regarding that project has surfaced since.
