Towns Seek to Escape Vicious Traffic Cycle
With the HOV lanes abolished, a consortium of Morris County
towns and transportation groups hopes to study policies to restrain
traffic growth in the I-287 corridor. Possible options are transportation-efficient
land planning, express bus services, rail station jitneys, tax breaks for
corporations that reduce car commuting and tolls for trucks. Truck traffic
has boomed on I-287 since NY and NJ sections were linked in 1993.
Federal transportation law now permits a limited number of state agencies
to test implementation of tolls on the Interstate system.
