The Newark City Subway, a 4.3-mile line between between Penn Station and Franklin Avenue in the North Ward is about to undergo a drastic character transformation. The line is famous among rail buffs for its well-maintained, old-fashioned 1940s trolley cars. But a $150 million modernization effort moved forward this week when NJ Transit's board of directors approved an $11.6 million signal system upgrade and a $9.2 million reconstruction of the Franklin Avenue station. Sixteen new light rail cars will begin running on the line early next year, and the subway will be extended almost a mile north to a new stop near the Belleville-Bloomfield border. Star Ledger
