Around the Region
The Newark City Subway, a 4.3-mile line between between
Penn Station and Franklin Avenue in the North Ward is about to undergo
a drastic character transformation. The line is famous among rail buffs
for its well-maintained, old-fashioned 1940s trolley cars. But a $150 million
modernization effort moved forward this week when NJ Transit's board of
directors approved an $11.6 million signal system upgrade and a $9.2 million
reconstruction of the Franklin Avenue station. Sixteen new light rail cars
will begin running on the line early next year, and the subway will be
extended almost a mile north to a new stop near the Belleville-Bloomfield
border. Star Ledger
