NYC Speed Hump Program Slow But Steady

Speaking at a press conference last week, New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Wilbur Chapman promised that the agency would continue to install speed humps as traffic calming measures throughout the five boroughs.

He noted that 116 speed humps were installed in 1998, up from just 28 in 1997. DOT Spokesman Mark Patterson said that the agency did not yet have a specific goal for 1999, but that they were going to keep up the same pace from last year.

Patterson also said that the program is going to focus heavily on the areas around schools and will be evenly distributed throughout the boroughs.

The humps are wider than standard speed bumps and are meant to slow vehicles to 15mph.
