Around the Region
NJ Transit has listened to a plea from Monmouth County NJ, and
put on hold plans to tear down four bridges and a pedestrian tunnel along
a proposed "rail trail" on an abandoned railroad bed between
Matawan and Freehold. The county would like to make a 12-mile "rail
trail," paralleling Route 79, for pedestrians and bicyclists along
the rail bed, and would like the right-of-way to be given to the county.
In Matawan, the proposed trail would connect with the existing county-owned
Henry Hudson rail trail that runs 10 miles from Matawan to Atlantic Highlands.
