NYC Transit officials have discovered an alarming number of
cracks in a key component of subway cars - a defect that authorities fear
could cause derailments. The cracks are turning up in the undercarriages
on four different models of cars, running on the A, E, F, G, R, C, Q, and
4 lines. Inspectors have found 72 cars with cracked trucks since December
1995. In the early '90s, the TA sued Pullman Standard Co. and its undercarriage
supplier over other cracked miscarriages - and won $80 million to have
