After announcing support for the Port Authority's planned train
to Kennedy Airport, Councilman Al Stabile (R-Ozone Park) has drawn a new
promise from the agency: that it will study the practicality of ferry service
between Manhattan and the Rockaways. Dismissing critics who call it a buyoff
campaign, PA has been courting Queens community leaders in its drive for
land-use approval for a key part of its air-train project: a controversial
elevated rail line along the Van Wyck Expressway. Stabile projected visions
of a 20-minute ride to Manhattan. Reaching the Rockaways by car or subway
from midtown Manhattan can take an hour. Newsday
