Southern Tier Expressway Changes
New York transportation officials have completed an application
to the federal government to turn the western half of Route 17 into Interstate
86. Eventually, the entire route from the Pennsylvania border near Erie
to 17's junction with the Thruway in Orange County would become I-86. Route
17, the "Southern Tier Expressway," is a four-lane highway for
most of its length, but has some intersections with traffic signals and
a variety of other features highway planners consider obsolete. NY State
sought and won inclusion of Route 17 as a "high priority" corridor
for federal funding in last year's TEA-21 transportation legislation.
