Why Not Walk?
1998 NYC traffic statistics reported recently in the NY Post:
- The average speed of vehicles on Midtown avenues was 7.6 mph, 10% slower
than the 1997's 8.4 mph.
- Average vehicle speed on crosstown streets was a blazing 5.9 mph, 5%
faster than 1997's 5.3 mph.
- Traffic on Port Authority crossings (George Washington Bridge, Lincoln
Tunnel, Holland Tunnel, Goethals Bridge, Outerbridge Crossing, Bayonne
Bridge) increased 2.9 percent.
- Traffic on MTA crossings (Triborough Bridge, Bronx-Whitestone Bridge,
Queens-Midtown Tunnel, Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, Throgs Neck Bridge, Verrazano-Narrows
Bridge, Henry Hudson Bridge) increased 4.8 percent.
