Road Accidents Outstrip War, HIV Deaths
Road accidents will kill or disable more people worldwide than war, tuberculosis or HIV by 2020, the International Red Cross said in its annual disaster report. As reported in the International Bicycle Fund Newsletter, Dr. Astrid Heiberg, president of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said at a news conference in Dehli that traffic accidents caused at least 500,000 deaths every year and that traffic accidents are the third largest cause of disability and premature death after clinical depression and heart disease - way ahead of war and HIV.
