We hope NJ DOT and municipal leaders of Newark and Irvington move to
build on the study's excellent recommendations. DOT began the study in
1997 after press attention to NJ's high rate of pedestrian fatalities.
Since then, NJ pedestrian fatalities have gone up again. Governor Whitman
made a point of spotlighting funds to implement the study's recommendations
in her budget address earlier this year. For the long run, the fundamental
issue will be transplanting the type of work done in the Pedestrian Safety
Study into NJDOT's regular capital and local aid programs.
