NJ Ready To Launch Traffic Calming Projects

NJ DOT is nearing the end of its state-wide Pedestrian Safety Study. The effort looked at pedestrian injuries and fatalities across the state, and identified a handful of persistent problem sites for traffic calming and other pedestrian safety treatments. The study produced detailed site surveys and recommendations for change at several sites in Newark and adjacent Irvington.

We hope NJ DOT and municipal leaders of Newark and Irvington move to build on the study's excellent recommendations. DOT began the study in 1997 after press attention to NJ's high rate of pedestrian fatalities. Since then, NJ pedestrian fatalities have gone up again. Governor Whitman made a point of spotlighting funds to implement the study's recommendations in her budget address earlier this year. For the long run, the fundamental issue will be transplanting the type of work done in the Pedestrian Safety Study into NJDOT's regular capital and local aid programs.
