Hopewell On Slippery Sprawl Slope

Hopewell Township, NJ's reluctance to endorse a massive highway interchange on I-95 near Trenton has stalled the project for now. The interchange is designed to accommodate a big new sprawling, car dependent office park for Merrill Lynch. But Hopewell officials think the scale of the interchange planned by NJ DOT is larger than that required by Merrill Lynch and fear it will spur future sprawl in the Hopewell Valley.

A DOT spokesperson cited in the Trenton Times adopted the disingenuous and contradictory position that the Department must build an interchange that can accommodate two decades of future development in the area, but that a high-capacity interchange at that point on I-95 will not influence whether or not additional development takes place. Merrill Lynch itself has spurred fears of development in the area by quietly purchasing additional land to the west of its office park site, and NJDOT and Mercer County have offered a number of vague and contradictory accounts about plans for development west of the Merrill Lynch site.
