Bar owners on Staten Island's south shore are complaining that
the city's new policy of confiscating suspected drunk drivers' cars and
new police checkpoints along main roads hurt their business. But the tough
policy is also spurring some long-needed innovation by drinking establishment
managers. "We're thinking of having a bus or van service available
for customers to call and get picked up, or driven home and doing this
on a continuing basis," an Island bar owner told the S.I. Advance.
Newsday reported Monday that 82 cars had been seized by the NYPD
since Mayor Giuliani launched the program on February 19.
