Weinstein Starts Drive For Gas Tax Consensus
At a Tuesday State Senate hearing, NJ DOT Commissioner James
Weinstein launched the possibility of a gas tax increase to finance future
transportation projects. "The gas tax is the obvious choice,"
he said. "There may not be any other options." Despite Assembly
Speaker Jack Collins' response that there would be no gas tax increase
during this legislative term, the Legislature could bring up the issue
after this year's election. A number of legislators at the hearing agreed
with Weinstein that the tax might be the only solution.
The idea is also not without popular support. Today, the Trenton
Times called on the Legislature to vote for a gas tax increase to save
the Transportation Trust Fund.
