Around The Region: NYC Transit Cleans Up


About 1,000 "Work Experience Program" workers who work for their welfare checks will be employed part-time mopping, sweeping, and removing trash in New York City's subways as early as this month. They will supplement NYC Transit's paid cleaning staff shrunk by budget cuts in 1995 and 1996, Transit officials said last week. The agency has come under fire in recent weeks by the Straphangers Campaign, who released a report detailing dirty conditions on the city's subways and buses. Newsday
