Around the Region: Fresh Kills Bypass?
Staten Island Borough President Guy Molinari told the S.I. Chamber
of Commerce recently that he wants to see the roads inside Fresh Kills
Landfill opened to the public after the dump is closed in 2001. The road
network inside the landfill would move traffic around the congested Richmond
Avenue commercial area by providing connections to the West Shore Expressway.
Molinari dubbed the plan "The Fresh Kills Bypass" and
said one of the largest impediments to smooth transport to the S.I. Mall
is competition between shopping and through traffic. The proposal echoes
an idea put forth several years ago by Assemblyman Eric Vitaliano. Advance
