S.I. Debates South Shore Bus Increase

Staten Island Borough President Guy Molinari wants private bus companies to serve four new routes from Staten Island's South Shore to Manhattan, via the Goethals Bridge, NJ Turnpike and Hudson tunnels. Molinari said private operators should be hired because NYC Transit refuses to serve the westernmost parts of the South Shore.

Amalgamated Transit Union Local 726, which represents NYC Transit bus workers, has launched its own campaign to win new South Shore service, among other Staten Island bus improvements like Verrazano Bridge bus lanes and a further roll back of express bus fares. The union thinks Molinari should focus his efforts - and political influence with the Mayor and Governor - on winning NYC Transit service. "The map of the South Shore, when it comes to transit, is almost identical to what it was 25 years ago," Local 726 president Larry Hanley told the Advance. The union has hired a horse-drawn stage coach to traverse the island, laden with signs reading: "Bring Staten Island's transit into the 21st Century" and "Stop horsing around with public transit." Staten Island City Council members and state legislators backed Hanley's call for NYC Transit service on the South Shore.
