Trash On The Trains
Rockland County is considering a switch to freight railroads
for its out-of-county garbage shipments. Most trash hauling from Rockland
now goes to Pennsylvania by truck. County officials say they could get
better rates by moving the trash further - and cheaper - by rail. They
also would like to save wear and tear on roads and bridges not made for
constant truck traffic. Several Rockland garbage transfer sites
abut active freight lines. The Journal-News has urged the County
to barter its trash hauling business for a commitment from CSX, operator
of the West Shore Line, to permit a trial of commuter service on the line.
