John Daly, 1929-1999

NY State Transportation Commissioner Joseph Boardman circulated a memo last week informing members of the transportation planning community of the passing in early April of John Daly, Boardman's predecessor as commissioner. Before his work for NY State DOT, Daly had served for several terms in the NY State Senate.

In 1997 and 1998, Daly acted as senior advisor to Governor Pataki on ISTEA reauthorization. In that capacity, he organized a national coalition of state governments and other entities that successfully defended many of ISTEA's progressive elements from attacks by interests seeking to roll federal transportation policy back to the days of the "highway bill." For this work, John Daly deserves the gratitude of advocates for a more balanced transportation system in our country.
