Next Stop: Tarrytown

The I-287 Task Force, an advisory panel created by Governor Pataki last year to find traffic reduction strategies in NY's Westchester and Rockland Counties, is considering a plan to add a second Metro-North train stop in Tarrytown beneath the Tappan Zee Bridge. A bus terminal would be constructed to transport bus commuters directly to the train, cutting the 10-15 minutes currently spent driving through Tarrytown streets to the nearest station miles away.

Proponents say this plan, proposed by Richard Duffy of the Empire State Passenger Association, would help reduce traffic congestion by reducing bus riders' commute time (and attracting new riders in the process) and removing dozens of buses from Tarrytown's streets.

A range of other traffic reduction options are also being considered by the Task Force, including another span across the Hudson, improved ferry service, a light rail network, and congestion relief pricing. Minus the additional bridge construction, all of these demand management alternatives need should be implemented to encourage the Tappan Zee's 7,000 rush-hour users to switch travel time, carpool, or use mass transit.
